Whether you are improving the lighting for a specific room or changing lighting on the entire house, there are three types of room lighting to keep in mind when planning a lighting makeover. Take a look at our suggestions below on how to light a room to create the perfect look for your home.

Ambient Lighting

Set the tone of the room and provide general illumination with ambient lighting, which can be found in ceiling fixtures like recessed lighting and chandeliers. Positioning recessed lighting around the perimeter or a chandelier in the center of a room can help the room look bigger and provides an overall comfortable level of light. For more control over the brightness and mood of the room, use dimmers, so as the day progresses, you can control illumination according to the daylight.

Task Lighting

Whether you are writing, reading or cooking, task lighting can add concentrated lighting, warmth and style to any room. Table lamps equipped with the right light bulb can provide great task lighting for a living room and home office. If you want a bright, clean bathroom, task lighting is key. You’ll want to light the vanity area with a fixture above the mirror or sconces on either side. When thinking of your kitchen, try under-cabinet lighting, where most of the work takes place.

Accent Lighting

Pendant lights are great in rooms with high ceilings to add light and visual interest. Pendant lights are ideal over islands and dining areas and offer a decorative accent and a softer, diffused light that filters through the hand-blown glass. They are also ideal for living rooms to help focus the room on architectural elements, paintings, sculptures or plants.
