Our History

Ferguson Enterprises (Ferguson) begins as the dream of three entrepreneurs–Charles Ferguson, Ralph Lenz and Johnny Smither.

Ferguson reaches $7 million in sales and opens its first showroom in Newport News, VA.

Ferguson opens its first distribution center in Richmond, VA, accelerating growth to $81 million in sales.

In the 1980s, Wolseley-Hughes Limited, a U.K.-based company with a rich and diverse history dating back to the 1880s, expands its businesses in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Wolseley-Hughes Limited renames as Wolseley plc and is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Meanwhile, Ferguson ranks as the largest wholesale distributor of plumbing materials in the United States.

With the launch of PROFLO™, Ferguson begins to develop a portfolio of brands that it owns, surpassing $1 billion in revenue.

Ferguson closes out the 20th century by reaching approximately $3 billion in revenue, 8,000 associates and 500 locations.

Ferguson expands coverage to the West coast with the integration of Familian Northwest.

Ferguson makes a significant move into eCommerce and celebrates its first billion-dollar sales month.

Ferguson establishes its National Sales Center to service property management, hospitality, government, national accounts and master distribution markets across the country through a centralized location.

Wolseley plc becomes Ferguson plc, aligning its name with its largest subsidiary in North America–Ferguson.

Ferguson plc completes the sale of its last operating business in Europe to wholly focus on serving customers in North America. Ferguson plc begins trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), with the ticker symbol FERG.

Ferguson plc moves its primary listing to the NYSE and reports fiscal year-end revenue of $29 billion empowered by 36,000 associates and 1,700 branches in North America. Since 1953, we have shown that together we build better.

Ferguson establishes a new corporate structure to domicile its ultimate parent company, Ferguson Enterprises Inc., in the United States. This better aligns the Company’s headquarters and governance with its operations and leadership.
